weekend at the hospital
okay, this is not a great way to start my third year in law school. friday night around 7pm, Home called and said my cha-tao ('driver' in fucking fukkienese) couldn't pick me up after class 'coz my grandfather slipped in his bathroom, bumped his head and was lacerated. i was dumbfounded for a few minutes and didn't know what to do, wether to go home and manage the affairs there, or run amuck to manila medical center.
i had to have a smoke, good thing jewel did need one too. so over a stick i've decided to catch a cab and head to UN avenue. i was praying dearly and incessantly that nothing quite serious aside from the laceration wound happened. so i arrived there in the ER in my attorneyish outfit definitely sticking out amidst the crowd of white clad interns and residents. my dad was looking at the rear and side view x-rays of my grandfather's skull, and with my limited knowledge of medicine, crime scene investigation style, nothing serious, no concussions, cranial fractures or what. but he had to be admitted overnight for observations since it is a natural reflex of the body to cause a swelling, on the area of impact. he also had other contusions in the body, but good things no fractures. he was conscious, he did not even vomit.
he did not want to be admittted and was begging me in his somehow childish eyed manner that we go home straight away after surgery. i had to persuade him in the most stoic manner i had to, but fuck it, i was almost teary eyed. i can't stand my old man like that... like a helpless little puppy, compared to the proud lion he used to be. kaya daw niya yun, wala daw yun. i don't know if it was the soldier in him, or the stubborness in him. my grandmother was another concern for me cause her blood pressure might rise again. good thing she was calm.
we just returned home to get some of my stuff. i'll be staying over at the hospital with my grandmother and my cousin who filed a vacation leave from work as a nurse in La Salle just to personally attend to him. haven't slept all night. cause he was topsy-turvy and didn't want to sleep on the patient's bed... he said it was only for the 'gravely' ill. he slept on the watcher's bed at the side. i don't know if he was missing the corners of his room or something. but i tell you, it was fucking hard to take care of him, trying to calm his rants and enduring his nasties. he couldn't stand not being in control of things.
lack of sleep was conpesated by nothing else but food and extreme amounts of coffee, ginseng tea and energy drinks. we've continuosly pigged on KFC, then i had to run to robinsons place to get the best comfort food for us... yellow cab pizza and go nuts donuts. the lady doctors in the hospital elevator were definitely craving for the same.
i tell you, it was so fucking hard... haaay, the things that i do for love. i had to beg off my saturday classes just to be there.
but hardship aside, and wisdom inset... it's but part of the natural order of things. Paterfamilias took care of us when we were so young and helpless, and the filius takes cares of the paterfamilias when he is old and helpless.
funny though, i knew more of the things that comfort my grandfather than my dad does. well, each one of us has a role to play in this game called life.
now, i have alot of catching up to do with my other life in law school.
